Sherborne Road to close for Major Drainage Work

Teams will be working night and day to upgrade drainage on a key road into Yeovil starting tomorrow.
The A30 Sherborne Road will be closed from around 3am on Tuesday 25 July for seven days for the installation of new pipes and gullies under the highway.
Due to the need for deep excavations in the road, a 24/7 road closure is the only option to keep workers and road users safe.
Somerset County Council teams will be working around the clock to keep this closure time to a minimum.
Cllr John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “This is a very busy road and clearly in need of repairs. We need to invest in improvements but there’s no simple way to do this properly without closing the road.
“We fully appreciate this will be disruptive, but we pledge to have teams working 24/7 until the work is completed and we’ll also be keeping you up to date on progress via @TravelSomerset on Twitter and on this page.
“Please use our website to plan your journey carefully, follow us for updates and be assured we’re doing everything we can to complete the work and get the road open again as quickly as possible.”
Councillor Peter Gubbins, Area South Committee Chairman at South Somerset District Council added: “It’s important to remember that Somerset County Council’s Highways team will be working day and night to proactively reduce the number of days that these essential and much-needed works will be completed over. This is a welcomed decision and will get traffic flowing in and out of Yeovil along Sherborne Road in seven days rather than the three weeks initially estimated.”
The stretch of Sherborne Road is showing significant signs of deterioration and highways teams have made 49 visits to temporarily repair cracks and potholes over the past 18 months.
To tackle the structural issues it is necessary to first upgrade the drainage before full resurfacing at a later date (likely to be in winter 2018 with night-time working).
While the road is closed, two advisory diversion routes will be clearly signposted – one for light vehicles using the A359 and B3148 and another for large vehicles along the A37, A303 and A357.
